Arusha National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible and diverse parks, located just a short drive from the city of Arusha. Though smaller than some of the other northern parks, it packs a variety of landscapes into its compact area. From the grassy plains to the forested slopes of Mount Meru, and the stunning crater lakes, the park offers a mix of scenery that makes every visit memorable.
Wildlife in Arusha National Park is abundant and easy to spot. You can see giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and colobus monkeys, while the streams and lakes attract hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of birds. Predators are present too, though sightings are rarer, with leopards and lions occasionally roaming the park’s forests and plains. Birdwatchers in particular will appreciate the more than 400 species recorded here.
One of the park’s highlights is its walking safaris, which allow you to explore the forest and plains on foot with an experienced guide. Canoeing on Momella Lakes is another unique experience, letting you glide past hippos, flamingos, and other waterbirds. For photographers, the reflections on the lakes and views of Mount Meru make for stunning shots at sunrise and sunset.
