Lake Manyara National Park is a small but incredibly diverse park at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment. Its centerpiece is the alkaline Lake Manyara, which shimmers in the distance and attracts thousands of flamingos and other waterbirds. Despite its compact size, the park is rich in habitats from lush groundwater forests to open grasslands making it a perfect first stop on a northern Tanzania safari.
One of the park’s most famous attractions is its tree-climbing lions, a rare behavior seen in only a few places in Africa. Large elephant herds are also common, and you may spot giraffes, buffalo, hippos, and troops of baboons along the way. Birdwatchers will love the variety here, with over 400 species recorded, including pelicans, storks, and colorful bee-eaters.
Because of its smaller size, Lake Manyara is ideal for half-day or full-day game drives. The mix of dense forest and open plains creates a different feel from the wide-open Serengeti or Tarangire, and sightings can be surprisingly intimate. The views of the lake against the towering Rift Valley wall are especially beautiful in the early morning or late afternoon light.
