Tarangire National Park is a hidden gem on Tanzania’s northern safari circuit, often less crowded than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater but just as rewarding. The park is named after the Tarangire River, a life source that draws animals from miles around during the dry season. Its landscape is dotted with iconic baobab trees, creating a dramatic backdrop for wildlife viewing.
Tarangire is especially famous for its elephants. Large herds sometimes hundreds strong gather here to drink from the river, making it one of the best places in Africa to see these giants up close. Alongside the elephants, you can spot lions, leopards, cheetahs, and even rare species like fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk. Birdwatchers will be thrilled too, with over 500 species recorded in the park.
The game viewing is excellent from June to October, when animals congregate around the river and waterholes. During this time, Tarangire hosts one of the highest concentrations of wildlife outside the Serengeti. The park’s varied scenery from open savannah to swamps and woodlands keeps every game drive interesting and full of surprises.
